The fire captain has been moved to ICU in serious but stable condition. The engineer was released from Santa Barbara Cottage Hospital to recover at home with injuries.
The cause of the vehicle accident is under investigation with CHP.

Both captain and engineer firefighters are awake and talking at Santa Barbara Cottage Hospital.

Santa Barbara County Fire Department responded to a vehicle accident at 5:22 am on Highway 101/Highway 1 in Gaviota.
Two firefighters were struck by a minivan while tending to a minor injury vehicle accident.
A total of 8 patients – two firefighters with major injuries and one patient with minor to moderate injuries, were transported to Santa Barbara Cottage Hospital – and the remaining five patients with minor injuries were transported to Marion Medical.
