United Way’s Fun in the Sun Program Now Hiring for Summer

Comprehensive free enrichment summer program supports hundreds of Santa Barbara children

United Way of Santa Barbara County is now hiring for this year’s Fun in the Sun — a free six-week summer learning program that provides academic and reading practice, hands-on STEAM activities, field trips and other enrichment activities for more than 400 current 2nd-5th graders.

Current opportunities include Fun in the Sun site coordinators, program leaders and site aides who will create a positive, safe, and supportive environment for participants.

Fun in the Sun is looking for staff who are able to help build safe and enriching environments for our students. We are looking for leaders and people who are able to be mentors and role models. We are looking for people who have experience in childcare and educators in the field. Staff should be ready to jump into a fast-moving environment and be flexible. We want staff who are passionate about the success of our students and are willing to provide these opportunities with a smile on their faces.

This year’s program will operate at six sites in Santa Barbara County, including Franklin Elementary, McKinley Elementary, Hollister Elementary and Aliso Elementary in South County. Santa Ynez Elementary and Mary Buren Elementary will serve students in North County.

Fun in the Sun is a national award-winning summer learning program that was first developed to address summer learning loss but has now expanded into a comprehensive program that serves students who qualify for the federal free/reduced lunch program.

Participants receive a full spectrum of services, including literacy and academics; community support and engagement; STEAM activities and fields trips; and emotional wellness and enrichment activities.

The program runs Monday through Friday from 8:30 a.m.-4:30 p.m. and provides snacks, breakfast and lunch for all students.
