UC Santa Barbara’s Gyenis Earns Water Polo Player of the Week Honors After Monster Saturday

The Big West announced UC Santa Barbara’s Adam Gyenis as the Men’s Water Polo Player of the Week on Wednesday, following the Hungarian’s impressive performance in Los Angeles over the weekend. It is the first weekly honor of Gyenis’ career.

The junior attacker from Budapest scored 11 goals in the span of two games last Saturday, both against teams ranked among the top 15 in the nation. Against then-No. 9(T) San Jose State, Gyenis tallied a hat-trick to lead the Gauchos to a 13-9 win in their first action of the day. In the second game, Gyenis went from impressive to downright dominant, scoring a career-high eight of the team’s 13 goals himself, powering UC Santa Barbara to victory over then-No. 15(T) Loyola Marymount. He also totaled five steals between the two games.

Following his monster Saturday, Gyenis is now second on the team in both goals (28) and points (40) this season. He ranks third in The Big West for goals and fourth for total points.

Gyenis and the Gauchos are headed to Orange County this weekend, where they will take part in the inaugural Big West-WCC Clash, hosted by UC Irvine. This is the first season sponsoring men’s water polo for both The Big West and the West Coast Conference.
