    UC Santa Barbara Women’s Volleyball Set To Face Houston In NCAA Opening Round

    The UC Santa Barbara Women’s Volleyball team is ready for the NCAA Tournament, competing on the biggest stage in college volleyball for the first time since 2019. In the opening round of the tournament, the Gauchos will take on the University of Houston, who is the eighth seed in this regional.


    Houston is coming into the tournament as the No. 8 seed in this regional. They ended the regular season with a win as they took down Kansas State 3-1 in Houston.

    As a team, the Cougars rank highly when it comes to their offense. They are 34th in the NCAA when it comes to kills, averaging 13.61 per set. Individually, Kellen Morin is the No. 1 player in the Big 12 when it comes to hitting percentage. She hit at a .390 clip throughout the season.

    The outside hitters lead the offense for the Cougars as senior outside hitter Kenna Sauer has the most kills on the team with 335 while fellow senior outside Abbie Jackson is close behind with 326 kills.

    The defense for Houston is led by senior libero Kate Georgiades. She has the most digs on the team with 428. This averaged out to 4.51 digs per set, the second-most in the Big 12.

    The Cougars are coached by David Rehr, who is in his fifth season with the program. During his time in Houston, he has accumulated a 102-43 record.


    The match will begin at 4:30 p.m. on Friday, Dec. 1, at the Maples Pavilion on the campus of Stanford University. For those who can’t make it, there will be two watch parties in Santa Barbara at Woodstocks in Isla Vista or at Home Plate Grill. For those watching from home, the match will be streamed through ESPN+.
