UC Santa Barbara Women’s Volleyball Ready for Big West Play Against Highlanders, Aggies

The UC Santa Barbara Women’s Volleyball team (14-2) will be on the road for their next two matches as they take on the UC Riverside Highlanders and the UC Davis Aggies. Tomorrow, Oct. 5, the Gauchos will be in Riverside, taking on the Highlanders before making their way north to take on the Aggies on Saturday, Oct. 7.

    LAST TIME OUT

The Gauchos were back in The Thunderdome for their first home Big West matches of the season as they took on the Cal State Fullerton Titans and the UC Irvine Anteaters. UC Santa Barbara finished the weekend with two more wins, taking down the Titans in four sets and the Anteaters in three. This puts the Gauchos at 4-0 in Big West play.

    HANDLING THE HIGHLANDERS

UC Riverside has had a strong start to Big West play, defeating Cal State Fullerton, CSUN and Cal State Bakersfield along the way. They only dropped a match to UC Irvine.

Tylee Fuller is a force at the service line for the Highlanders. She currently ranks 55th in the NCAA and No. 1 in The Big West in this category, averaging .48 aces per set so far this season. The libero is also one of the main leaders on defense as she has 129 digs.

Outside hitters Delaney Tate and Sophia Ewalefo are the biggest offensive weapons for UC Riverside. Senior Tate leads the team in kills with 169, while sophomore Ewalefo currently has 121. Beatriz Silva is the primary setter for the Highlanders. She has 371 of the team’s 625 total assists.

The Highlanders are coached by Nicky Cannon, who is in her second season with the program. She has already tied the number of wins she earned last season. Cannon was familiar with The Big West as she was the assistant coach of Cal State Fullerton before taking over in Riverside.

    ATTACKING THE AGGIES

UC Davis had a strong non-conference season with wins over North Carolina and Arizona before starting Big West play. The Aggies are undefeated to start Big West play as they won their first four matches against Cal State Fullerton, UC Irvine, CSUN and Cal State Bakersfield.

The Aggies are a strong serving team as they are 47th in the NCAA in aces per set, averaging 1.81 per set. Individually, freshman middle blocker Ally Chandler is a huge part of the Aggies’ front row. She is 31st in the NCAA in total blocks with 71 while ranking 57th in blocks per set as she averages 1.22 per set.

Opposite Olivia Utterback has been a huge part of the Aggies’ offense this season. The junior leads the team in kills with 175. Freshman outside hitter Reese Diersbock is right behind her with 129 kills.

The defense is led by libero Julia Ng as she has the most digs on the team with 185.

The Aggies are coached by Dan Conners, who is in his ninth playing season with the program. During that time, he has accumulated an overall record of 128-123.
