UC Santa Barbara Women’s Tennis Honer, Kiss Show Well in Battle in the Bay Classic

Amelia Honer and Camille Kiss left their mark in The Battle in the Bay Tournament. The duo recorded multiple ranked wins and Amelia Honer took home some hardware as she was runner-up in the Main Draw.

The two opened up the tournament with a big win in doubles play on Thursday, Sept. 21. Honer and Kiss defeated the No. 12-ranked doubles partnership in Guillermina Grant and Mai Nirundorn from Georgia. The two won 8-5 to advance to the quarterfinal round of the main draw.

The following day in the quarterfinal round the two played against Anna Campana and Nikki Redelijk from Pepperdine. A hard-fought match ultimately ended in the Waves’ favor and Honer and Kiss would be eliminated from the doubles bracket.

Amelia Honer opened her singles draw against Maria Vyshkina from Fresno State. Honer would win in straight sets, 6-1, 6-2 to move on to the round of 16. There she would meet a familiar face in Guillermina Grant whom she and Camille Kiss played against in doubles competition. Honer would win set one 6-4 before Grant evened it up at one set apiece with a 6-2 victory in set two. Honer would rebound nicely and dominate the third set winning 6-1 to advance to the quarterfinals.

In the quarterfinal round, Honer met Lucia Peyre from Oklahoma State. She would make quick work winning in straight sets 6-3 and 6-3 to advance to the semifinals. In the semifinal round, Honer competed against another Oklahoma State student-athlete. This time No. 93-ranked Ayumi Miyamoto. A tough battle in the first set saw Honer take the early lead, winning set one 7-5. She carried that momentum into the next set and won 6-2 to advance to the Main Draw Finals round.

In the finals, she met her toughest opponent yet. No. 26-ranked Connie Ma from Stanford. Honer gave it her all in the first set losing 7-6 (5). That is where the magic ran out and she would drop the second set 6-1 and be named runner-up for The Battle in the Bay Classic.

Like Honer, Camille Kiss had a familiar face in the Singles Main Draw bracket. Her opening round match was against Mai Nirundorn from Georgia who the duo played and beat in doubles competition. Kiss would lose in straight sets and find herself in the consolation bracket.

Kiss played against Helena Naramont of TCU in the opening round of the consolation bracket, winning in straight sets 6-3 and 6-4. She would then get a bye into the quarterfinal round where she met Aya El Sayed from Colorado. After dropping the first set 7-5, Kiss came back and dominated the second set 6-1. Unfortunately, she would drop the tie-breaking set 12-10.

Kiss would wrap up her tournament Sunday afternoon in the Extra SG Bracket. Kiss played Midori Castillo of Arizona and won in straight sets 6-3 and 6-3 to finish her tournament on a high note.

The Gauchos will be back in action on Friday, Sept. 29 as some individuals will travel to the Bay Area again to compete in the Cal Invite. The same weekend some other student-athletes will travel to Cary, N.C. to compete in the ITA All-American Championships.
