UC Santa Barbara Men’s Basketball Wraps Up Non-Conference Slate With Win Over Howard

The UC Santa Barbara Men’s Basketball team (7-3) wrapped up the non-conference schedule as they took on Howard University, who made it into March Madness last season. After a tough and physical game between these two teams, it was UC Santa Barbara who came out with the win, defeating the Bison with a score of 94-81.

Josh Pierre-Louis was unbelievable tonight. He was two assists shy of a triple-double. Ariel Bland, Yohan Traore, Cole Anderson and all of those guys were unbelievable. Teams are going to try and take Ajay away, and Howard doubled him and denied him, but that’s good for us because we have a lot of great players. They can try to do that, but there are other people that are going to beat them.”

This was a tight game between these two teams from the start. Despite UC Santa Barbara working to grab a big lead, the Bison would fight right back and tie up the game. Once Josh Pierre-Louis scored from beyond the arc and Yohan Traore earned three points on his play, the Gauchos grew their lead to five and built on it from there. By the time the first half ended, UC Santa Barbara was up 49-41.

Once they stepped back on the court for the second half, the Gauchos came out hot. They went on an 8-0 run in the first three minutes, causing Howard to use one of their timeouts early on. Even though the Bison tried to rally back, going on multiple scoring runs of their own, they just could not keep up with the Gauchos. UC Santa Barbara closed out their final non-conference game of the season with a score of 94-81.

    • Josh Pierre-Louis had a monster game for the Gauchos, racking up a season-high 21 points to go along with 11 rebounds and eight assists. This led to his second-straight double-double and fourth of the season. Combining all of the points he scored along with his assists, Pierre-Louis was a part of 41 of the team’s 94 points.
    • Yohan Traore had a stellar offensive performance for the Gauchos as he put up a new career-high of 24 points, shooting at 80 percent from the field. Along with that, he added on six rebounds.
    • Cole Anderson played a huge part in the team’s offense. He finished tonight’s game with 19 points.
    • Ariel Bland is the last Gaucho to earn double-digit points. He ended the night with 10 points while also contributing five rebounds, a block and an assist.
    • In his first appearance in The Thunderdome, Ben Shtolzberg had a strong showing, putting up nine points to go along with three assists.

The Gauchos will begin Big West play next week on the road, starting the trip at UC Davis before making their way to UC Riverside. The first game against the Aggies will be on Thursday, Dec. 28 beginning at 6 p.m. For fans who can’t make it to Davis, they can watch this game on ESPNU.
