On Wednesday night around 8:35 pm, a solo driver was rescued after a vehicle over-the-side incident on Northbound HWY 101 in Gaviota. According to the Santa Barbara County Fire Department, a Toyota Tacoma went off the road and plunged around 70 feet down in the creek. The firefighters set up rope systems to reach the vehicle while heavy traffic was reported.
After a 15-minute extrication, the solo adult male driver/occupant was rescued with major injuries. A rope system was used to bring the patient up to the roadside. The patient was transported by Calstar to Santa Barbara Cottage Hospital for further treatment. The vehicle removal process was in progress, and HWY 101 was expected to open in approximately 30 minutes. The cause of the incident is under investigation.
