W.A.C.E. Annual Conference
Last week the Chamber’s President & CEO, Public Policy Manager and Director of Communications attended the annual W.A.C.E Conference in Sacramento. The conference was attended by over 350 chamber leaders from 21 Western States and Canada. The 3-day event included opportunities for networking, top-notch keynote speakers, workshops and educational sessions to learn from the best and brightest chamber organizations across the West. We are excited to bring back best practices and share ideas learned from other successful chambers.

Bailard Multi-Family Housing Project
On February 22, the Santa Barbara County Planning Commission held a hearing regarding the Bailard Multi-Family Housing Project – a proposed 169-unit mixed-income housing development located at 1101 & 1103 Bailard Avenue, Carpinteria. In 2022, the Chamber’s Public Policy Committee supported this project as a commonsense solution to our region’s workforce housing woes. The February 22 meeting was not for approval/denial of the project. The Planning Commission instead heard an update on the project. The Chamber encourages any local businesses concerned about housing, particularly in Carpinteria, to look into this project and consider supporting it at future meetings alongside the Chamber.
Solomon Hills — The Next Step in Santa Barbara County Housing
On March 8, the Santa Barbara County Planning Commission will hold a hearing regarding the Solomon Hills project, located just south of Orcutt. Solomon Hills is a potentially 4,000-unit project and reuse of a 1,903-acre industrial property. The proposal is for a small-scale village that strives to be a model of sustainable communities. Given the severity of employee housing challenges our local employers face, Solomon Hills aligns perfectly with the type of big-picture thinking the Chamber supports regarding housing. Solomon Hills does not shy away from our region’s housing crisis, instead choosing to meet it head-on with an impactful proposal. The March 8 hearing will be for initiating a County General Plan Amendment and re-zone of the site. This would allow the applicant to study the project proposal further. Initiation on March 8 does not mean that the project is approved. The Chamber encourages any local businesses or individuals interested in impactful solutions to our region’s housing challenges to support the project on March 8.
