Santa Barbara Public Library Kicks Off SB Reads 2023

Each year, the Santa Barbara Public Library (SBPL) encourages local residents to read the same book at the same time to connect with one another, engage in discussions about issues that matter, and examine the world from viewpoints other than their own. Through Santa Barbara Reads, SBPL distributes free copies of featured titles throughout the community and offers programs and book discussions in order to engage deeply with issues explored in the novel.

The Library invites the community to kick-off SB Reads 2023 this week with two events, one for youth and families and one for teens and adults.

SBPL and the Library on the Go van will be at Wylde Works (609 State Street) at 6 p.m. on Thursday, September 28. This event will be the first opportunity for community members to pick up print copies of the featured title for SB Reads, A Long Petal of the Sea by Isabel Allende, and register for special events. Stay and listen or participate to stories on the theme “Blood is Thicker,” with Backbone Storytelling hosted by Jenna Tico beginning at 7 p.m.

For SB Reads 2023, SBPL has also selected complimentary children’s books. The first chance to pick up a copy of Dreamers by Yuyi Morales will be on Wednesday, September 27 at 2:30 p.m. at Eastside Library at 1102 E. Montecito Street. Librarians will lead a bilingual family storytime and craft to complement the story.

SB Reads will continue through November with book discussions, workshops, lectures, and special events for all ages in both English and Spanish. Learn more about SB Reads at the Library’s website. All library programs are free and open to the public.

SB Reads is funded through the annual support of the Santa Barbara Public Library Foundation. To learn more about the foundation and how to support SB Reads 2023, visit their website.
