Rep. Carbajal Calls Out Republican-Led House for Failing to Act on Legislation Tackling California’s Housing Crisis

Carbajal: “I was sent to this chamber, by my constituents, to enact policies that will help lower those skyrocketing housing costs… there are bills that we could pass today”

Congressman Salud Carbajal called on the Republican leadership of the U.S. House of Representatives to act on legislation to help mitigate high housing costs and increase access to affordable housing options in California.

“The people’s House went the entire month of November without passing a bill to tackle our nation’s housing crisis,” said Rep. Carbajal. “I was sent to this chamber, by my constituents, to enact policies that will help lower those skyrocketing housing costs…there are bills that we could pass today to help, including bipartisan ones that I’ve helped write.”

You can view the Congressman’s full remarks below:

Rep. Carbajal has made lowering housing costs for Central Coast residents and finding solutions to California’s housing crisis a key priority of his time in Congress.

Last month, he announced $550,000 in grants from the Federal Home Loan Bank of San Francisco to help first-time home buyers on the Central Coast.

He also in November introduced bipartisan legislation aimed at improving housing access and affordability for Central Coast veterans, the Home for the Brave Act.

Earlier this year, construction on a new affordable housing community in Guadalupe began thanks in part to funding he directly secured in the 2022 federal budget.

Rep. Carbajal’s work in Congress has also delivered $4 million to support the operation of the Anderson Hotel in San Luis Obispo, which provides housing options to low income individuals in the region.

Rep. Carbajal is one of the co-authors of the Housing for All Act, a landmark bill that would provide ten years of new and increased funding for construction of new housing units, rental assistance, hotel and motel conversions, and more.

Rep. Carbajal originally introduced the Housing for All Act in 2022 alongside California Senator Alex Padilla and Representative Ted Lieu.

The Congressman’s remarks as prepared for delivery today can be found below:

“Happy first day of December, Mister Speaker.

I rise today to point out that the people’s House went the entire month of November without passing a bill to tackle our nation’s housing crisis.

Communities on California’s Central Coast are ranked as some of the most expensive in the country to live in, and I was sent to this chamber, by my constituents, to enact policies that will help lower those skyrocketing housing costs.

Congress needs to help increase availability of affordable housing options. We need to reform and expand programs that provide housing assistance; like I have been pushing to do for working families and veterans.

And we need to invest in the community solutions that are helping those experiencing homelessness.

Mister Speaker, there are bills that we could pass today to lend a hand, including bipartisan ones that I’ve helped write.

But, by all means; let’s keep pursuing baseless impeachment inquiries, or defunding the salaries of Cabinet members that we don’t agree with.”
