New Chair Backs Installed In The UC Santa Barbara Thunderdome

All fans will have navy blue, padded seats in The Thunderdome this season.

UC Santa Barbara Athletics announces a major milestone in the upgrades to The Thunderdome as the chair back seating project is entering the final stages towards completion. Thanks to the generous donation from Jeff and Judy Henley ’66/H’09 of $3 million, the facility received an overhaul to the venue seating.

“I have deep gratitude and appreciation for Jeff and Judy Henley for their generosity and for bringing this project to fruition,” said Director of Athletics Kelly Barsky. “The chair back seating project speaks directly to our vision and commitment to serve and support a vibrant, connected Gaucho campus and community. I can’t wait for completion and to see our Gaucho community filling The Thunderdome for events.”

This multi-phase project began with upper and lower sidelines receiving the navy blue, padded seats that fans enjoyed for the last several seasons. Now, the renovation will complete the end zone sections and include the padded chair back seating and upgraded ADA seating locations. The women’s volleyball team will be the first to host an event with the new chair backs next month with the men’s and women’s basketball teams opening their seasons in the renovated facility in early November. The project has dramatically changed the visual aesthetic of The Thunderdome along with previous projects completed by gifts from a number of donors including, but not exclusive to, the 54-foot video board, updated scoreboard as well as the new practice and main court upgrades. In the end, it will result in an enhanced experience for our nationally-competitive, Division I programs and all of the Gaucho fans and community that enter the famed Thunderdome.

A deeper look into the project and impact of the generous gift from Jeff and Judy Henley will be featured Sunday on Noozhawk.com. Legendary sportswriter Mark Patton shares an exclusive conversation with Jeff Henley and head men’s basketball coach Joe Pasternack about the impacts of this philanthropic gift.
