Winter Storm Update

Update January 10, 2023, at 12:00 pm 


Current Evacuations

All Evacuation Orders and Shelter in Place CANCELLED at 2 PM for Santa Barbara County.

  • Be aware that flooding and debris may still be present in the area. NEVER drive, swim, or walk into floodwaters. Turn around, don’t drown!
  • Flood waters can also hide hazards such as washed out road surfaces and large rocks. Be cautious of potential rock falls when traveling roads and avoid traveling at night.
  • Due to significant debris on roads, some residents may not be able to access their homes or leave the impacted areas. If residents cannot leave and need resources, please contact the Santa Barbara County Call Center at 833-688-5551. For medical emergencies and life-threatening safety issues, call 9-1-1.
  • Be aware that response crews are continuing clean-up and repair efforts.
  • Stay alert to changing conditions.

Road Closures

The US-101 southbound closure at Milpas Road and SR-150 were opened on 1/10/23, at 1:40 pm. CHP Ventura has opened US 101 southbound at SR-33. The public can now travel south on US-101 through the Santa Barbara, Montecito, and Carpinteria areas into Ventura.

UPDATE: Caltrans are working to reopen the northbound 101 in the Gaviota area and are reporting that the highway is expected to reopen no later than this evening. Updates will be shared at https://quickmap.dot.ca.gov/.

School Closures

Based on extreme and unpredictable weather conditions expected in the morning hours, and continued road closures and flooding, county Sheriff, Fire and EOC (Emergency Operations Center) officials are advising schools to remain closed (1/10/23). At this time, we have received confirmation that all Santa Barbara County public schools will be closed on Jan. 10, 2023. Outside of an evacuation order, decisions about school closures are made on a school-by-school basis. Families in private schools should look for updates from their individual schools.


Public Transporation

Santa Barbara MTD To Resume Bus Service Around Noon Today (1/10/23), Operating on a Modified Sunday Schedule.The public should stay tuned to MTD’s Twitter feed at www.twitter.com/santabarbaramtd for updates on service.

Santa Barbara Airport – The Santa Barbara Airport is currently CLOSED due to flooding. All commercial flights are cancelled until further notice. For the latest local alerts, visit www.readysbc.org. For information about specific flights, please contact your airline directly.

Clean Air Express regional commuter service between South Coast and North County is suspended today (1/9/23) due to Hwy closure (and tomorrow (1/10/23) – planned). For the latest, visit www.cleanairexpress.com.

VCTC Coastal Express service to and from Ventura County is suspended. For the latest, visit www.goventura.org.

EasyLift ADA Paratransit remains operational with limited drivers in service to operate only life-sustaining trips (e.g. Dialysis) but can assist for evacuation of people with access and functional needs.

AMTRAK SURFLINER train service is currently suspended between Los Angeles and San Luis Obispo both directions.


Court Information

Due to impacts of the storm all jury trials in the South County are cancelled today (1/10/23). Jury trials in the north county are on an as needed basis.

Jurors are instructed to continue to check their reporting status online at JuryService.sbcourts.org or by calling the 24-hour Information Line at (855) 955-1103

Courtrooms are operating in Santa Maria and Santa Barbara today, however the rain may impact operations. Contact your attorney, if you have one, for further information.

Residents should:

  • Leave Now!
  • Expect strong winds which can cause debris to fall onto roadways and power outages.
  • BE PREPARED to sustain yourself and your household for multiple days if you choose not to evacuate, as you may not be able to leave the area and emergency responders may not be able to access your property in the event of road damage, flooding, or a debris flow.

A SHELTER IN PLACE remains in effect for Santa Barbara County impact areas (Cave and Alisal). Go to innermost room or high ground. DO NOT attempt to leave. If already evacuated, remain out of the area.

An EVACUATION ORDER EFFECTIVE IMMEDIATELY Jan. 9, 2023 for the following areas due to threats to life safety caused by the ongoing storm:

  • ENTIRE COMMUNITY OF MONTECITO.
  • ALL RESIDENTS OF TORO CANYON, PADARO LANE FROM CALLE REAL TO SANTA CLAUS LANE IN CARPINTERIA AND SUMMERLAND AREAS.
