    Highway 101: Carpinteria to Santa Barbara Construction Update – December 17 – January 6, 2024

    Timeframe:  December 17 – January 6, 2024 *3-week update

    Spotlight:  At the San Ysidro Roundabout, the northbound off-ramp at San Ysidro Rd will reopen by Dec. 25 (earlier than anticipated unless rain delays occur). Crews will grind and pave the approach areas leading into the roundabout. Please expect night noise and flaggers directing traffic. In the Padaro segment, the new northbound off-ramp at S Padaro/Santa Claus Ln is open, and crews are continuing work on the northbound lanes. 

    In Summerland, crews are finishing up construction activities, including some finish grinding for pavement. In Montecito, work in the median to remove old guardrail and pavement continues along with vegetation clearing to prepare for construction. Please expect trucks hauling material at night and night noise. Landscaping continues at the Olive Mill Roundabout. 

    Closures (weather permitting)
    Please drive safely through the corridor and remember to Slow for the Cone Zone. The speed limit is reduced to 55 mph for safety throughout the construction areas. Two freeway lanes remain open in each direction during daytime hours. Please expect day and night work. Crews will not work holidays and during rain events.

    • Northbound Highway 101
      • Sunday nights, 9:00 pm – 5:00 am, 1 lane: Carpinteria Ave to Olive Mill Rd
      • Monday – Thursday nights, 8:00 pm – 5:00 am, 1 lane: Carpinteria Ave to Olive Mill Rd
      • Off-ramp at San Ysidro Rd, reopening by Dec 25, during the closure drivers can use the northbound off-ramp at Sheffield Dr (If rain delays occur, the ramp will reopen the week of Jan 1.)
      • On-ramp at San Ysidro Rd, closed until early 2025 (for roundabout and highway work), drivers can use the northbound on-ramp at Sheffield Dr
    • Southbound Highway 101
      • Sunday nights, 10:00 pm – 7:00 am, 1 lane: Olive Mill Rd to Carpinteria Ave, on-ramp at Posilipo Rd
      • Monday – Thursday nights, 8:00 pm – 7:00 am, 1 lane:  Olive Mill Rd to Carpinteria Ave, on-ramp at Posilipo Rd
        • Dec 18 – 20:  off-and on-ramps at Sheffield Dr and Wallace Ave (as needed)

    Please note: consecutive ramps in the same direction will not be closed at the same time (unless where noted) to allow drivers to use a ramp before or after a closure. To view timelines, detours, and maps, please visit www.SBROADS.com and select the project segment. 

    Highway 101: Montecito

    The Montecito segment is located between Sheffield Dr and Olive Mill Rd. The Highway 101 improvements are underway on the San Ysidro Overcrossing in conjunction with the San Ysidro Roundabout.

    • On Hwy 101, lanes have been restriped to shift lanes for median construction and open an auxiliary lane between the southbound on-ramp at Olive Mill Rd and southbound off-ramp at San Ysidro Rd. 
    • Crews will continue to clear vegetation, set temporary barriers, work on drainage improvements, and remove old guardrail (see photo above). Crews will also begin removing old pavement in the median as weather permits. Please expect trucks entering and exiting the median at night and night noise.
    • Northbound off-ramp at San Ysidro Rd
      • Crews will also work on temporary improvements to the northbound off-ramp at San Ysidro Rd. Please expect night noise. The off-ramp will reopen by Dec 25 unless rain delays occur.

    Olive Mill Roundabout

    The majority of construction occurs between 7:00 am and 4:30 pm. 

    • Crews will continue landscaping and planting (see photo above). New street lighting has been installed. Please remember to yield at each roundabout entrance. Flaggers will direct traffic as needed.

    San Ysidro Roundabout
    The majority of construction occurs between 7:00 am and 4:30 pm. 

    • Work will continue on the roadway and median islands (see photo above). Crews will grind and pave the connecting legs approaching the roundabout as weather permits. Please expect night noise. Lanes will also be striped as weather permits.
    • The northbound off-ramp at San Ysidro Rd will reopen by Dec 25 unless rain delays occur.
    • Landscaping early work will begin.
    • Utility companies will also continue work in the area and along N Jameson Ln. Please expect flaggers directing traffic as needed for the roundabout project and utility work. Please expect 5-10 minute delays.

    Highway 101:  Summerland
    The Summerland segment is located between Sheffield Drive and North Padaro Lane.

    • Highway 101
      • Freeway lanes & Evans Ave Undercrossing
        • Please note that the new carpool lanes will be striped and opened with the completion of the Padaro segment. In the closed lane by the median, crews will install orange safety barrels and signs to denote the closure area. Crews are finishing up construction activities, including power washing (see photo above) and some pavement grinding. Please expect night noise.
    • Landscaping
      • Landscaping pre-construction activities will continue.

    Highway 101:  Padaro
    The Padaro segment is located between North Padaro Lane and Santa Claus Lane.

    • Highway 101 & ramps
      • Northbound lanes and ramps
        • Crews will continue to install rebar and concrete for Continuously Reinforced Concrete Pavement (see photo above). Crews will work on new drainage improvements, retaining walls, safety barriers, and signs.
        • Northbound off-ramp at S Padaro Ln – the new ramp opened on Dec 8.
      • Toro & Arroyo Parida Creek Bridges
        • Crews will continue work on safety barriers and pavement tie-ins at both bridges. 
    • S Padaro Ln Undercrossing
      • For the new bridge, crews will work on safety barriers.
    • N Padaro Interchange
      • Concrete Mix Site: Dec 17 – Jan 4 (excluding holidays and rain), 8:00 pm – 5:00 am, crews will mix concrete for the Padaro segment northbound lanes. By mixing concrete on-site, the project saves an estimated 463,771 truck miles, reduces water use by 400,000 gallons (concrete mixed on-site uses less water), and saves taxpayers between $10-$15 million.
      • Concrete recycling continues by the northbound Highway 101 off-ramp at N. Padaro Ln.
    • Sound walls
      • Northbound by Serena Park
        • Crews will continue safety barrier work and block installation for the new sound walls.

    Highway 101: Carpinteria to Santa Barbara is a project undertaken by Caltrans and SBCAG in cooperation with local agencies to add a new carpool lane in each direction between Carpinteria and Santa Barbara. Highway 101: Carpinteria is the first segment under construction as part of the Highway 101: Carpinteria to Santa Barbara project.
