Ghost Story Challenge Deadline Coming Up September 30

Winners To Be Announced October 26

Time is running out to enter the Goleta and Santa Ynez Valley Libraries Ghost Story Challenge 2023! We’ve already received a lot of spooky stories and can’t wait to see what else our community comes up with. Submit a scary or mysterious story related to the supernatural by Saturday, September 30. All entries must be the original work of the submitter, with a maximum length of 500 words. The Challenge is open to all local writers in three age categories: Adult (18+), High School (9th-12th grades), or Middle School (6th-8th grades).

Story categories include Scariest, Best Plot, Most Original, Writer’s Craft, and Best Overall. High School and Middle School prize categories include the above as well as: Best Dialogue and Best Setting. All submissions will be made available to the public with the permission of the authors.

A panel of professional writers will judge the entries. An event to celebrate all participants will be held in the Santa Ynez Valley on Thursday, October 26th, at 5:00 p.m. A venue is still being confirmed – stay tuned for details. Winners may read their stories aloud or choose to have someone else read them aloud. Refreshments will be served, and costumes are encouraged!

The winners will also be announced on the Libraries’ Facebook pages on the evening of October 26th.

Winners from each category will receive a book, a gift bag, and an award bookmark. The book prizes include titles signed by the authors, as well as others chosen by the judges: Sadie Hartmann’s 101 Horror Books to Read Before You’re MurderedThe Devil Takes You Home by Gabino Iglesias, The Beast You Are by Paul Tremblay, My Heart is a Chainsaw by Stephen Graham Jones, Mother Howl by Craig Clevenger, Billy Buckhorn: Book of Spells by Gary Robinson, and more.
