Gauchos Drop First Home Contest of Season to LMU

The UC Santa Barbara Women’s Basketball team fell for the first time in front of their home crowd on Sunday night. A slow start for the Gauchos proved costly down the stretch as LMU defeated Santa Barbara 64-57.

Thoughts on the game: “Once that rim got big in the third quarter it got really big for them,” said Henrickson. “We were just caught staring at the ball a lot. As frustrated as we are and as poorly as we played we made it a two-point game.”

The Gauchos started the game playing from behind as the Lions won the opening tip and went on a 10-6 run to control the first part of the game. The Gauchos struggled to shoot the ball in the opening Fram going 3-of-15 from the floor and not making a three-point attempt. The Lions built upon their lead and took a 15-9 lead to the second quarter.

In the second quarter, the Gauchos struggled to get stops on the defensive end. LMU grew their lead by as much as 14 but Santa Barbara was able to trim it down to eight by the end of the quarter. Flora Goed shined in the quarter scoring four points grabbing a rebound and dishing out an assist to help the Gauchos start to find their rhythm.

Out of the break, UC Santa Barbara went on an 8-0 run to tie the game at 32-32 at the eight-minute mark in the third quarter. After a layup by Goed tied the game, LMU was forced to take a timeout to stop the Gaucho run. Jessica Grant added two three-pointers on the run. The two teams would come out of the timeout and trade baskets for a bit but in the latter part of the quarter, LMU started to pull away making it a two-score game at the end of the third.

The Gauchos would fight back to make it a two-point game with just under eight minutes to play. They continued to fight pulling within one with under three minutes to play after Alexis Whitfield made a layup from a pass by Jessica Grant. Santa Barbara continued to hang around and not let it get beyond a one-possession game, but a made three-pointer with 30 seconds left would be the dagger. The Lions went up by five and would win the game 64-57.

    • Skylar Burke posted a season-high and tied her career-high with 13 points in the loss.
    • Alexis Whitfield was one rebound shy of recording her third consecutive double-double.
    • The Gauchos posted a season-low 11 turnovers and a season-low 10 personal fouls.
    • UC Santa Barbara grabbed double-digit offensive rebounds for the second time in three games.
    • Jessica Grant made her first career collegiate start tonight.

UC Santa Barbara will have one final non-conference game against Life Pacific on Wednesday, Dec. 20. Tipoff is set for 2 p.m. in The Thunderdome. Fans are encouraged to bring an unused/unopened toy for the Gauchos Toy Drive. With the donation of a toy, fans will receive a ticket voucher to redeem a complimentary ticket in the Gauchos’ Big West opener against UC Davis on Dec. 28.
