The UC Santa Barbara Women’s Basketball team pulled out their third straight victory with an overtime win against the Nevada Wolf Pack on Saturday afternoon. The Gauchos were led by Alyssa Marin who scored a career-high 22 points while three other Gauchos scored in double figures.
FROM HEAD COACH BONNIE HENRICKSON
Thoughts on the game: I just thought it was a tough, gutsy win,” said Henrickson. “I thought our group had great energy in the beginning with our big run to start. Then they answered and from there it was back-and-forth. We would get separation and then they would get separation and it was a fun game for fans. There were so many big possessions down the stretch and often times when you get into overtime it’s about who made plays to get it to that point. I felt like we grabbed the momentum back right away after they had all the momentum going into overtime. We stayed aggressive and got to the free-throw line, got offensive rebounds, along with Anya’s (Choice) and Skylar’s (Burke) big threes.”
HOW IT HAPPENED
From the opening tip, it was all Gauchos. UC Santa Barbara opened up the game on a 9-0 run spearheaded by Flora Goed scoring four of the nine points. Alexis Whitfield and Alyssa Marin also added to the Gaucho’s opening run. After forcing Nevada to take an early timeout the Gauchos continued to score at will, extending their lead to as much as 12 points in the opening frame. The Nevada offense started to find its footing in the later part of the quarter and carried that little bit of momentum into the second quarter.
The Wolf Pack ended up going on a 19-5 scoring run to take a five-point lead with under three minutes to play in the second quarter. The tide quickly turned down the stretch. After going down 29-24 UC Santa Barbara shutout the Wolf Pack for the final two minutes and 50 seconds of the period. In that span, Santa Barbara went on a 13-0 run to regain the lead and take a 37-29 lead into halftime.
Nevada was able to control most of the third quarter forcing the Gauchos into some tough shots and turning them over. Santa Barbara was able to show their toughness. The Wolf Pack took the lead for all of 21 seconds after an 11-2 run, but UC Santa Barbara turned up the intensity not allowing the opposition to regain the lead in the third quarter. The Gauchos took a slim one-point (51-50) lead into the fourth quarter.
Another Wolf Pack scoring run continued the back-and-forth between the two teams. Santa Barbara would time and time again show their resilience. After falling behind by six with just under six minutes to play, the Gauchos stormed back to tie the game with a minute to play. Santa Barbara did not stop there as they proceeded to take a three-point lead with under five seconds to play.
After Nevada took a timeout to advance the ball, the Wolf Pack inbounded the ball to Claire Jacobs who would hit a game-tying three-point jump as time expired to send the game to overtime.
With all the momentum on Nevada’s side, the Gauchos took it right back with two three-point baskets from Anya Choice and Alyssa Marin. The Gaucho defense allowed just two points in the overtime frame and pulled out a hard-fought 73-66 victory.
