Love the old pictures of #Goleta, so here’s a repost from @stowhouse
Today is #nationaldriveinmovieday, so here are some photographs of the Airport Drive-In Theatre at the intersection of Hollister and South Fairview Avenues! Do any of you remember the Airport Drive-In? If so, please comment your stories below! We`d love to hear them!
National Drive-In Movie Day commemorates the day in 1933 when the first drive-in theater in the United States opened. Goleta`s own Airport Drive-In opened in April of 1951 with room for 700 cars, and was first listed at 6201 Hollister Avenue. The address was later changed to 400 Frederick Lopez Road.
Now closed, the lot is currently used for airport parking, although the entrance gateway and ticketbooths remain.
Photo 1 dates to 1953, Photo 2 to the mid-50s, and Photo 3 to the late 1960s.
Tom Modugno @goletahistory wrote a wonderful article about the Airport Drive-In featuring some more great photos, and it can be read here: https://goletahistory.com/airport-drive-in/
