Dennis Tito Makes History as First Space Tourist on April 28, 2001

On April 28, 2001, Dennis Tito became the world’s first space tourist. Tito, an American businessman and former rocket engineer, paid $20 million to the Russian Federal Space Agency for a seat on a Soyuz spacecraft to the International Space Station (ISS).

Tito’s trip was controversial at the time, as NASA and other space agencies argued that space tourism was premature and potentially dangerous. However, Tito’s mission was ultimately approved and he spent nearly eight days on the ISS before returning to Earth.

Tito’s journey paved the way for other private citizens to visit space, and several companies are now developing spacecraft and space tourism programs.
